Northern California - March 5, 2014

This report covers conditions and observations made on Tuesday, March 4, 2014.

Today’s photos for the northern region present the developing nuts of the Sonora in the Chico area of Butte County, followed by views of the Carmel and the Butte in the Arbuckle area of Colusa County.

Scattered showers during the night produced misty conditions at sunrise in the Sacramento Valley on Tuesday morning. Overcast skies in the early morning hours gradually thinned to produce partly cloudy conditions later in the day in the region’s northern areas, while areas to the south remained under overcast skies all day long. Rainfall totals were unimpressive, with wettest locations reporting just a few hundredths of an inch. However, when combined with the rain the region has received over the past week, orchard soils remain quite damp.

Temperatures were buffered by the early morning moisture, with morning lows reported in the lower 50’s while daytime reached only into the lower 60’s.

The bee’s interest in leaving their hives was diminished by the cloudy, misty conditions and observers reported only 3 to 4 hours of fair activity during the afternoon hours on the rapidly declining bloom.

The bloom in the Sacramento Valley is nearly complete, now that the Butte has dropped below the 10% threshold. Padre remains just above the 10% bloom threshold and will complete its bloom in short order. As can be seen in the photos accompanying this report, the balance of the region’s orchards have for the most part shed their petals and are predominately in the jacket stage, with nutlets beginning to emerge from the jackets in the more advanced varieties.

The recent rains have left many plantings around the region well saturated, preventing growers from sending machinery into their orchards. Observers have reported that helicopters are being prepared for additional disease treatments that may be necessary in the coming days.
